Patient Care: Sports Medicine and EMR
Pathway I:
Emergency Medical Responder Extended

This course will teach students to provide immediate care to an ill or injured person and train them to assist emergency medical service (EMS) providers. Skills include the history of health care, EMS, CPR, patient assessment, legal and ethical issues, triage and emergency responsibilities. Embedded within the course is a study of basic medical terminology. Prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, special endings, plural forms, abbreviations and symbols are included in the content.
This course satisfies UC/CSU “G” college preparatory requirement.
Pathway II:
Sports Medicine I
Recommended Prerequisite: EMR
Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in Sports Medicine Practicum
Grades: 10-12

1-3 hours per day
This course is designed for students to develop their skills as a physical therapy aide, athletic trainer assistant, fitness instructor, medical, and sports equipment salesperson. The students are trained at locations to practice and develop the skills they have learned in the classroom. Subject matter will also include such items as personal attitude, appropriate work habits, and professional appearance. The training program may be directed to meet the student’s individual needs and interests. Students will attend class for 1 hour per day and will be required to complete 1- 2 hours of additional practical time in related experience.

Pathway III:
Sports Medicine II
Recommended Prerequisite: Anatomy & Physiology
Prerequisite: EMR and Sports Medicine I
Grades: 11-12

The aim of the Sports Medicine & Therapeutic Services Level II program is to further develop the basic knowledge and skills of a Sports Medicine & Therapeutic Services Level I that in turn will improve their ability to contribute to safer sporting events and organizations. It is anticipated that the experience gained since completion of the Level I course will provide course participants with sufficient insight to assimilate this higher level of knowledge into their role as an Athletic Trainer. As a consequence of completing the required course units, it is expected the Sports Medicine & Therapeutic Services Level II will be able to apply appropriate first aid and emergency care of athletes at a more advanced standard than a Sports Medicine & Therapeutic Services Level I.

Pathway IV:
Sports Medicine Practicum
Recommended: Anatomy & Physiology
Prerequisite: EMR or concurrently enrolled in Sports Medicine Level 1 or 2

This course is an on-site educational program for students to develop their skills as a physical therapy aide, athletic trainer assistant, fitness instructor, medical, and sports equipment salesperson. The students will train at community locations to practice and develop the skills they have learned in the classroom. Subject matter will also include such items such as personal attitude, appropriate work habits, and professional appearance. The training program may be directed to meet the student's individual needs and interests, depending upon the community training site. Training sites will include high schools, junior colleges, and college athletic training programs, private health clubs, hospitals, and private physical therapy clinics.

Pathway I:
Intro to Medical Professions
Recommended Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to provide students with an overall introduction to medical professions including legal and ethical responsibilities of a medical professional, measurements and mathematics applied in healthcare careers, body systems along with anatomy and physiology, and will assist students in developing a career plan. Emphasis is placed on the skills necessary to enter the health care field and exploration of the many different employment areas within healthcare.
Pathway II:
Advanced Concepts of the Medical Profession
Recommended Prerequisite: Into to Medical Arts

This course is a capstone course for the Health Careers Pathway. There are many topics and skills that are not addressed in your average health career preparation. This course covers many of those concepts including legal and ethical issues, therapeutic communication skills, cultural diversity, disease and body systems and the effect of life stages on treatment. Students finishing this course will be able to communicate with patients, families, and health care workers of all ages and cultures as well as being able to navigate appropriate legal documents for patients and deal with ethical dilemmas that may arise. As a culminating project, students will create a work portfolio that demonstrates their learning throughout the course. Elements to be included will be essays, legal documents and copies of multimedia presentations. An additional culminating activity which may be included would be student participation in a community health fair educating the public about a chronic illness and the culture(s) the illness most frequently affects.
