Getting Ready for TK: 7 Skills to Practice at Home
Helping your child practice a few everyday skills can build confidence and independence before starting Transitional Kindergarten.
Bathroom Independence – Children must be able to use the toilet on their own, as teachers and aides cannot assist. Tip: Practice regular bathroom routines at home.
Self-Dressing – Practice putting on jackets, zipping, and managing clothing independently. Tip: Let your child choose their clothes to encourage independence.
Language Development – Use clear words and ask open-ended questions to grow vocabulary. Tip: Ask “What happened today?” or “Tell me more about that.”
Fine Motor Skills – Strengthen little hands with scissors, crayons, Play-Doh, and tweezers. Tip: Try fun crafts or picking up small objects during play.
Opening Food – Learn to open lunch containers, snack bags, and water bottles without help. Tip: Practice with real snack items before school.
Backpack Skills – Practice opening, closing, and caring for their backpack. Tip: Have your child pack and unpack their bag each day.
Social Skills – Play, share, and talk with other children to build communication skills. Tip: Arrange small playdates or group activities before school starts.
Practicing these small skills at home helps your child feel confident and ready for TK!
